Premier League Restart Roundup

Man City roared to victory, Liverpool were frustrated and Chelsea came from behind in the first full round of fixtures in the Premier League since March.

Following the two midweek fixtures that caught up on games in hand, a full round of fixtures started on Friday 19th June.

Norwich were up against Southampton, desperately in need of a win to move closer to the other teams fighting relegation. However, the Saints were not at liberty to give them the opportunity to begin to move off the bottom of the table. They impressively dispatched the Canaries 3-0 at Carrow Road, with a 16th league goal of the season for Danny Ings complimented by efforts from Stuart Armstrong and Nathan Redmond.

Tottenham and Manchester United contested the other game that evening, and Spurs took the lead on 27 minutes through Steven Bergwijn's powerful effort which was helped by David De Gea's poor goalkeeping. Thankfully his blushes were spared when Eric Dier brought down Paul Pogba in the box, which allowed Bruno Fernandes to stroke home the penalty. There was a late scare for Tottenham as United were awarded another penalty in stoppage time, but VAR correctly reversed the decision.

Third placed Leicester then travelled to Vicarage Road to face Watford on Saturday, and it was two stoppage time goals that saw it end all-square. Firstly Ben Chilwell's thunderous strike in off the post put the Foxes in front in the 90th minute, before Craig Dawson volleyed in from close range following a corner.

Arsenal faced Brighton away after being outclassed by Manchester City 3-0 in midweek. Despite Bernd Leno suffering a bad injury after landing awkwardly on his ankle, the Gunners went 1-0 up in the second half courtesy of Pepe's stunning curling effort. However, Lewis Dunk scrambled in an equaliser before Neal Maupay, who had earlier been involved in the incident that caused Leno's injury, coolly slotted home in the last minute. Arsenal's chances of securing Champions League football are even slimmer now after back-to-back defeats.

West Ham did little to alleviate their fears of relegation as Wolves defeated them easily. Adama Traore made the difference off the bench in the second half, as his cross was headed home by Raul Jimenez. He also set up Matt Doherty to cross for Pedro Neto's thumping volley, as they moved onto the same points as Manchester United in fifth. Meanwhile, the Hammers remain only above the relegation zone on goal difference.

That team keeping West Ham from going into the bottom three are Bournemouth. They failed keep the pressure on the teams above them after losing 2-0 at the Vitality Stadium to Crystal Palace. Goals in the first 25 minutes were enough to do the trick for Palace, as Luka Milivojevic curled in a free-kick and Jordan Ayew slotted in from close range. The Eagles may still fancy their chances of securing European football next season, as they are only four points off Manchester Utd and have now won four games in a row.

On Father's Day the first of three games saw Newcastle defeat Sheffield Utd 3-0 in what was one of the Blades' worst defensive performances of the season. John Egan being sent off in the 50th minute really didn't help their cause as Allan Saint-Maximin, Matt Ritchie and Joelinton all found the net after they went down to ten men. This was a good day for Joelinton, who finally scored his second Premier League goal, his first since 25th August to finally end a rotten goal drought. The Magpies also took a massive step to safety as that victory moved them 11 points clear of relegation

Aston Villa went up against Chelsea next and caused a shock when Kortney Hause gave them a lead just before half-time. However, Christian Pulisic was subbed on in the 55th minute and equalised within five minutes of coming on. Olivier Giroud drove in the winner just two minutes later to move Chelsea within three points of third-placed Leicester.

The Merseyside Derby was the final game of the day, and was unfortunately a very dull affair. Liverpool lacked their usual urgency in attack, and it was in fact Everton who looked the most like winning towards the end, as Allison first denied Dominic Calvert-Lewin before Tom Davies hit the post with the rebound. Liverpool still move one point closer to securing the Premier League title.

Finally, on Monday Manchester City dispatched Burnley 5-0 in a confident display. Braces from Phil Foden and Riyad Mahrez and an effort from David Silva saw them produce an easy win. Burnley were admittedly playing in unfortunate circumstances as they were unable to name a full substitutes bench due to contract issues and injuries.

Had City dropped points here then Liverpool would have only needed victory against Crystal Palace on Wednesday to secure the title. They'll have to wait a little while longer with the form City are in, as it looks unlikely that the defending champions will drop any points in the meantime.
